What is K-pop?
K-pop *(Korean pop) is a form of popular music that comes from South Korea as part of South Korean culture. The South Korean pop music was called originally called *gayo. It is said K-pop originated from J-pop (Japanese popular music).
While "K-pop" can be a general term for all popular music. It covers various different forms and types of music, but even so, K-pop commonly is often used in a limited sense for any Korean music and artists associated with the entertainment and idol industry in the country, regardless of the genre.
It includes styles and genres from around the world, such as pop, hip hop, R&B, experimental, rock, jazz, gospel, reggae, electronic dance, folk, country, disco, and classical on top of its traditional Korean music roots. Most artists, or idols if you may, are divided into "generations". Like 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation. As mentioned there are 4 generations. The 3rd being the biggest and the 4th thriving.
The term "K-pop" became popular in the 2000s.
Brief history
The history of Korean popular music can be traced back to 1885 when an American missionary, Henry Appenzeller, began teaching American and British folk songs at a school. These songs were called *changga, and they were typically based on a popular Western melody sung with Korean lyrics. For example, the song "Oh My Darling, Clementine" became known as *Simcheongga.
Groups and Soloists
Examples of popular K-pop artists in the industry could be groups like BTS, Seventeen, EXO, TXT, NCT, GOT7, Ateez, Stray kids, Twice, Blackpink, Mamamoo, IVE, Itzy, Aespa and etc.
Then you have the soloists Taeyeon, IU, Chungha, Jeon Somi, Sunmi, AleXa, Zico and Shaun. There obviously are many more but these are the artists I know.
